Modernisation of signalling systems in Latvia

INGENO Europrojekte GmbH strengthens its presence in the Eastern European region: Alcatel SEL AG Stuttgart has entrusted the company with the implementation planning for signalling systems and underground cabling on the railway link between the Belorussian border near Indra and Ventspils, Latvia’s major port. In addition, INGENO Europrojekte GmbH has been awarded the order to manage and monitor the surveying works, as part of the basic analysis, on the so-called east-west corridor.

Upgrading of the signalling and cabling systems and digital mapping are planned for the complete freight railway line of the so-called east-west corridor in Latvia.
The project covers the upgrading of all existing relay controlled safety systems dating from 1965 with the Alcatel LockTrack 6151 solid state interlocking system SSI. Other measures include the installation of new points heating systems, the erection of an operations control centre in Jelgava, south of Riga, and underground cabling works. This involves 356 km of single-track sections (track gauge 1.524 mm), 32 railway stations and the modification of 55 level crossing installations. The project is expected to be completed in 48 months (January 2005 to December 2008). The new interlocking systems are to be put into service by 2009 on a step-by-step basis.

Latvia became a member state of the European Union on 1 May 2004. As one of the long-term consequences of Latvia’s accession to the EU, the freight transport volume on the railway links between Russia/Belorussia and Latvia’s Baltic Sea ports is expected to double in the next ten years. The major part of this freight traffic is routed over the east-west corridor. Modernisation of the railway line has therefore become indispensable. The upgrading of the signalling systems will for the most part be financed by the EU. Alcatel SEL AG won the contract following an international call for tenders issued in 2004. It will implement the project on a turnkey contract basis, i.e. on completion of the project the work is handed over in fully operational condition to the client.

Munich S-Bahn Main Line
From December 2004 the ten-minute frequency will be introduced in the Munich S-Bahn network, so that it can better cope with the 750,000 daily passengers. Within the scope of this major project, the BPG Bauüberwachungs- und Projektsteuerungsgesellschaft mbH was responsible for the construction supervision.
