Historic Peace Treaty in Southern Sudan
On January 9, 2005, representatives of Sudan’s government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) signed a peace agreement, which puts an end to the 21-year old civil war in southern Sudan. It also creates the preconditions for the construction of the new railway network, for which INGENO Europrojekte will carry out the overall planning.

Over 5,000 people cheered as Sudan’s vice president Ali Osman Taha and
SPLA leader John Garang put their signatures under the historic
document. The core of the agreement is the SPLA’s right to six years of
self-rule in southern Sudan and to half the revenue from Sudan’s oils
wells and other resources. After these six years the population will
decide by referendum whether the southern part of Sudan is to secede or
not.
The festive ceremony at the Nyayo Stadium in Kenyan capital Nairobi was
attended by more than 20 African heads of state and government. Kenyan
president Mwai Kibaki, his Ugandan colleague Yoweri Museveni and U.S.
Secretary of State Colin Powell signed the peace treaty as witnesses.
Kibaki, whose country has moderated and also to a great extent financed
the peace talks since 2002, was hopeful that the end of the north-south
conflict will have a favourable effect on the continuing civil war in
the region of Darfur. As one of a united Sudan’s future two vice
presidents and president of an autonomous southern Sudan, John Garang
has already announced his support. “We cannot have peace in one part of
the country and war in the other,” said Garang.
The designated head of government considers the construction of a
railway network as a top priority in the reconstruction of the ravaged
country. Already in October Garang had met up with Jens Flachsbarth,
CEO of the INGENO Group, and Klaus Thormählen, Managing Partner of
Thormählen Schweißtechnik AG. On this occasion the two German engineers
presented the feasibility study prepared by INGENO Europrojekte for the
gigantic rail project. Today, with the peace treaty signed, the
requirement for international reconstruction aid is fulfilled, so the
INGENO Group expects that a solution for the existing financing gaps
and an order for the first planning stage will be forthcoming soon.
