Progress in the East African Project
Distinguished visitors at the INGENO Group in Berlin: Kenyan government officials spent four days in the Federal capital to discuss Kenya’s participation in the planned railway network in East Africa.
Jens Flachsbarth, CEO of the INGENO Group, was quite satisfied with the
outcome of the talks. The negotiations are believed to have brought the
start of construction of the first section a good deal closer. Kenya
would have promised to conclude, before the end of the year, a
memorandum of understanding with the Thormählen Group on the planning
of the section between Mombasa and Nairobi. The INGENO Group,
responsible for the overall planning, could therefore expect to begin
with the planning early next year.
The basis for the talks were the recent positive developments in Sudan,
where a peace agreement is expected to be signed still this year. This
was announced by the two main parties in the conflict, the Sudanese
government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLM/A), at the
extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council in Nairobi on November
19th. The peace treaty would end the 21-year old, bloody conflict
between the Christian-black south and the Arab-Muslim north and thus
pave the way for the reconstruction of the destroyed country.
The agreement provides for the formation of a new coalition government
in Khartoum and an even split of power and resources between the two
parties in the conflict. The People’s Liberation Army (SPLM/A) in
southern Sudan would acquire limited political sovereignty and be able
to autonomously steer the development of the region.
INGENO Europrojekte has already, on behalf of the SPML/A,
conducted a feasibility study for a comprehensive railway network,
which would connect southern Sudan with Kenya and Uganda, and thus
allow the economic opening-up of the country with its rich reserves of
raw materials. The Kenyan and Ugandan governments are both receptive to
the project. The talks in Berlin focused on the financing of the first,
approx. 1,500 km long section from Juba (Sudan) to Rongai
(Kenya). The total cost for this section has been estimated at
around 3.2 bn euro.

| Modernisation of signalling systems in Latvia |

| INGENO Europrojekte GmbH strengthens its presence in the Eastern European region: Alcatel SEL AG Stuttgart has entrusted the company with the implementation planning for signalling systems and underground cabling on the railway link between the Belorussian border near Indra and Ventspils, Latvia’s major port. In addition, INGENO Europrojekte GmbH has been awarded the order to manage and monitor the surveying works, as part of the basic analysis, on the so-called east-west corridor. |
