Magdeburg Railway Node

The upgrading of the Magdeburg railway node has been identified as one of the key priorities in the Federal Transport Facilities Plan. INGENO Europrojekte GmbH has been entrusted with the technical equipment planning of the first upgrading stage.

As a railway node in the Eastern countries, the site has in recent years recorded a significant increase in transit long-distance and goods traffic as well as in regional traffic. Hence the need for the creation of an efficient infrastructure that is adapted to the future traffic flows and volumes.

This major project will be implemented in several development stages. The planning of the first two development stages is carried out by an engineering group. As a member of this engineering group, INGENO Europrojekte GmbH is responsible for the planning of the following equipment techniques:
• signalling and control equipment
• telecommunications equipment
• 50 Hz equipment
• points heating equipment
• mechanical engineering equipment
In the first development stage, computerised signal boxes were erected in one of the biggest projects in its kind. The project has already been implemented by the firm Siemens AG in Braunschweig. A total of eight signal box computers and approx. 2,300 connection signal units (ASE) are used to control over 960 signals and over 350 points between Schönebeck, Magdeburg-Sudenburg, Glindenberg and Biederitz.

The second development stage is due to be implemented in the next few years. This stage will cover the complete reconstruction of the Magdeburg main station with the connecting line sections as well as partial reconstructions in the Magdeburg-Neustadt and Magdeburg-Buckau stations to adapt them to the new rail plan of the main station. The project involves the planning of extensive and complex construction works, taking into account the specific requirements of the computerised signal box technology. These measures should ensure the long-term efficiency of the Magdeburg railway node.
