Railway Project in East Africa
With a feasibility study for the construction and operation of a railway link, the INGENO Group has laid the foundation for the implementation of a unique transport project in Sudan.
After 21 years of civil unrest this project paves the way for a durable
pacification and economic development of the country. Crucial for
economic development is the opening-up of the flat country via a 4,100
km long rail network. The railway should connect the country’s huge raw
material resources with Eastern African transhipment centres in
Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya.
The study was commissioned by Sudan’s People Liberation Movement
(SPLM). A peace agreement between the SPLM and the government in
Khartum defines that the new provincial government can to some extent
autonomously decide on the development of South Sudan. The construction
of the new rail network is given the highest priority, as it allows the
optimal economic opening-up of a flat country such as Sudan with its
widely distributed natural resources. To be able to export its goods
and participate in global trade, Sudan moreover requires access to the
Indian Ocean. This is why the first approximately 1,000 km long stretch
runs from Juba in northern Sudan via northern Kenya to Nakuru in
eastern Kenya, which connects to the port of Mombasa. A link to
Uganda’s railway system in Packwach is also planned for the
future.
The INGENO Group recommends a standard track gauge (1,435 mm) of a high
technical standard for the new railway connection. The time of
construction before commissioning of the first section is estimated at
four years, and construction costs for the initially single track line
at around 2.5 billion euro. First negotiations on the financing of this
major project are under way. In October 2004 the SPLM will present the
feasibility study in Nairobi, Kampala and Nimule, seat of the new
provisional government in South Sudan.
