Berlin Railway Node

Complete reinstatement of the Berlin suburban rail system (S-Bahn) and improved connection to the Berlin long-distance rail network have been a priority objective since the reunification. BPG Bauüberwachungs- und Projektsteuerungsgesellschaft mbH is responsible for the technical equipment of this multistage project.

In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, a mushroom concept has been developed for this purpose, which provides, amongst others, for the construction of the long-distance track between the Halensee and Schönhauser Allee stations.

The technical equipment of the multistage project has been entrusted to Bauüberwachungs- und Planungsgesellschaft mbH (BPG). The Berlin railway node involves the following individual projects:
  • Reconstruction of the S-Bahn infrastructure of the Westend-Jungfernheide section up to the Schönhauser Allee S-Bahn station; ring closure of the S-Bahn section in September 2001
  • Installation of overhead wires in several construction stages
  • Modification of the signalling equipment for commissioning of the long-distance rail network and its replacement by computerised signal boxes (planned by 2006)
  • Control of the S-Bahn in the upgraded section via two computerised sub-control centres
  • Construction of 6 points heating systems 50 Hz and 3 points heating systems 17.7 Hz in the upgraded areas
  • Implementation of a tunnel rescue concept for the S-Bahn tunnel between the Bornholmer Straße and Schönhauser Allee stations
  • Adaptation of the telecommunications equipment to the changed signalling and operating conditions as part of the completion of the Wedding and Gesundbrunnen stations (September 2001 and September 2005 respectively)
  • Erection of overhead wires and associated cable and switching equipment
  • Commissioning of the Schönhauser Allee rectifier sub-station as the first new generation station (2003)
  • Equipment of the long-distance rail network with a 16.7 Hz overhead contact system by 2005
