One of the busiest lines in Germany, Berlin – Spandau West – Hamburg Central Station has a total length of 283 km and 21 stations. INGENO Europrojekte GmbH has been entrusted with the technical equipment planning for upgrading the line to a speed of 230 kph.

The purpose of the upgrade is to optimise the line as a superior alternative to road transport,  making it even more attractive for business travellers. In February 2002, as part of an agreement among the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Housing, the relevant countries and DB AG, it was decided to shorten the travel time between Hamburg and Berlin to less than 100 minutes. In the first stage of construction, the line was already upgraded and electrified for a speed of 160 kph. The Hamburg-Berlin section will be upgraded to 230 kph by the end of 2004. The line upgrade calls for a total investment of 1.4 billion euro, which goes into the overhaul of tracks and roadbed, the elimination of 54 level crossings, the reconversion of platforms in 21 stations and the installation of modern signalling and control equipment.

Alongside the technical equipment planning, INGENO Europrojekte GmbH was responsible for the co-ordination of all planning documents for this line upgrading project. Apart from the preparation of the overall project design, the work included all associated works for the control and signalling equipment (more than 300), the final elaboration of the safety relevant aspects for the computerised signal box technology, the planning of the technical equipment for the level crossing replacement options and the planning of the cab signalling (continuous automatic train running control). Moreover, INGENO Europrojekte GmbH participated in the preparation of the overall project scheduling and supported the implementation management for the technical equipment of the line with its own employees.
